Rally
Info
As
a club we try and organise monthly rallies, these are usually club
member sites where the member has arranged a one day visit with
the farmers permission, for which we make a donation to the farmer. We
make this into a competition and best coin and best artefact of the day
wins a bottle of wine as long as the finds are taken to the next club
meeting for a vote between attending members and guests. In this way
everyone can see what was found at that rally. We also photograph best
finds and put them on the website (see below).
We reserve the right to cancel all rallies until the last minute. This
is usually due to weather (we don't want to detect in the rain) or
maybe the farmer has to cancel permission due to livestock, shooting,
contamination, disease, etc.
For this reason we use a RALLY MOBILE PHONE and at any time you can ring :-
07963 094555
for
the very latest information. If it is engaged, then others are calling
and listening to a message, so keep trying. We will no longer use "Cancelled Rally" signs at the site.
We will always try and run rallies as scheduled, but we do not want to
annoy the farmer or make more mess than necessary. We will not run rallies in the rain, if light drizzle is forecast we will go ahead with fingers crossed.
It is a condition of membership that members find and organise club rallies occasionally for the benefit of the members.

Previous Rallies :-
July's Rally - Wootton Wawen
On
the weekend, 18th - 20th July we had an inter-club rally against the
Swansea Metal Detecting Club; during the 'foot and mouth' crisis, they
put on a rally for us down on the beach, so finally we got to invite
them up to compete against us in the fields of Warwickshire.
We chose a suitable farm with the great promise of history and let
about 28 members of each club compete from 9 am on the Saturday
morning. It was a bit windy, there was occasionally a shower, but
overall we had a fantastic social event with many treasures from
history discovered.
On the first day one area of the farm produced about 25 roman coins and
a single hammered penny. There was also a silver 1811 tokens, John
Wilkinson token, Saxon pin, and a belt decoration in the shape of a
head, found on the farm.
On the Sunday, we opened up another large field on the farm and this
produced a wonderful Charles Ist 6d, an Edward groat, a Vicky shilling
and another Edward penny. Also artefacts were found including several
crotal bells, Saxon buckle, thimbles, etc.
In late afternoon we put all the finds into the two club cabinets and
decided by a show of hands that Swansea Metal Detecting Club had won
the weekend, well done all. We hope to re-claim the trophy next year on
one of your sites.

crotal bells, etc...

June's Rally - Aston Cantlow
This
rally was held in conjunction with Aston Cantlow Historic Society,
right in the centre of their village. We had a good turnout of approx.
35 members and guests but we were an old pasture and the historic stuff
must have been very deep. There were several medieval buckles and even
a perfect beehive thimble, but the majority of finds were Georgian and
Victorian.

Last May's Rally - Studley Castle
Such
a promising site, either side of a sweeping drive leading up to a
castle on top of a hill. Although everyone went home with a pocketful
of finds, there was not much history in the ground for us to find.
Ray
Homer found a small foreign coin (Venetian !), there was a few silver
coins, a George III shilling and a wonderful jockey head both found by
Neil Gutteridge, the odd 6d, lots of predecimal, and an unusual
horseshoe found by Lee Harris.
